Sus fortificaciones, s\u00f3lidas, se deben a la posici\u00f3n fronteriza con Portugal. Parad\u00f3jicamente, esta frontera, la m\u00e1s estable de toda la historia europea y sin apenas cambios durante 500 a\u00f1os, fue, de ambos lados, una de las fronteras continentales m\u00e1s protegidas.
