En 1851 perdi\u00f3 oficialmente sus funciones defensivas para ser poblado \u00fanicamente por artesanos y agricultores. Su misi\u00f3n inicial fue la de supervisar la carretera que une Groningen, una ciudad bajo dominio espa\u00f1ol, de Alemania. Es una de las fortalezas en forma de estrella m\u00e1s espectaculares de Europa. La plaza, de forma pentagonal, presenta su per\u00edmetro perfectamente definido por 14 tilos de m\u00e1s de 300 a\u00f1os. En la plaza\u00a0 centrl se sit\u00faan las casas m\u00e1s importantes, como la Casa del Capit\u00e1n, la Casa del Comandante o la del Director de la Escuela, ya que la ubicaci\u00f3n de los edificios en el fuerte fue pensada jer\u00e1rquicamente. La iglesia protestante data de 1869 y est\u00e1 significativamente cerca de la plaza, pero no dentro de ella.
