The walls surrounding the centre were torn down in the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, but their original positions can still be seen, marked by the \u201cmuurhuizen\u201d, the clay wall-houses. Linear suburbs have grown outside the old city, along the main roads. In time, the spaces between these and the city were filled up, and the city itself expanded even further, beyond the highway.
